Emma Watson explained her praising of Beyonce for being an independent woman
After a tantalizing photo of her appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair, poor little ol’ Emma Watson there had to go on the Twitter to explain her more than two-year-old comment praising Beyonce for being an Independent woman.
Emma told Tavi, “When I watch this album I feel like she is truly displaying her own sense of agency and it is hard to look at a lot of other pop stars right now and say the same…Any ways, I am so glad you asked me about this because I want to be Beyonce's scholar and just talk about her all the time.”
Welp, that comment didn’t go over too well with folks like Piers Morgan, Peggy Truong, and Leah Thomas.
They think the youngster was being a hypocritical feminist because of what they saw as little Emma there speaking ill about Beyonce's sex appeal.
Morgan got so mad with the young lady, who is young enough to be his daughter, that he wrote an article for the Daily Mail.
Old Man Morgan wrote that he was justified in bad mouthing the young lady, who is young enough to be his daughter, because little Emma there showed her stuff on the Vanity Fair cover after she “bad mouthed” Beyonce about showing her stuff in a music video.
Let Old Man Morgan tell it, little Emma messed up when she failed to put her interviewer, Tavi, in check when she expressed her confliction over Beyonce being a “very strong woman” who chose to allow a man to direct a video that was based upon strong women.
The old man decided the best way to make his point was by quoting Tavi, herself, without quoting little Emma’s response to Tavi. Old Man Morgan quoted Tavi as saying, “As I was watching, I felt very conflicted. I felt her (Beyonce's) message felt very conflicted in the sense that on the one hand she is putting herself in a category of feminist, but then the camera, it felt very male, such a voyeuristic experience of her.”
For those who haven’t read the article, this would be very convincing evidence. Reading Tavi’s comment about how she was “conflicted” over Beyonce's decision to allow a man to see her through his eyes, followed by the old man’s comment that little Emma failed to check Tavi for using her brand of feminism “as stick with which to beat other women,” would make a person say, “those women are just hating on the Bey.”
And this is exactly what the old man wants folks to do. He wants folks to read his article and say, “Those are some nasty, hateful, spiteful women there.” But, this is not the case with Tavi and Emma. Evidence of this is little Emma’s comment to Tavi.
Emma told Tavi that it is not unusual for folks in the entertainment industry to consider it bad for a megastar like Beyonce to appear with her husband and child because it takes away from the image of her being available.
Emma told Tavi, “-in her position, and for a lot of young musicians, actors or people in our industry, it’s as though you get a memo: don’t be seen with your boyfriend or your wife or your child because you still want your audience to believe or male fans of Beyonce to believe that they could possess her; that in some alternative universe they could be with her.”
Here, little Emma is saying that Beyonce is fighting back against a false image that Hollywood wants to create.
And folks with common sense can understand that point because no one wants to be made in another person’s image.
It is, by all means, the very identity shaping that feminists and minorities in general fight against and something which Emma makes clear that she believes Beyonce has successfully done: “And the fact she was doing it for herself and the control that she has directing it and putting it out there, I agree is making her sexually powering because it is her choice.”
The young lady goes on to praise how much of an independent woman Beyonce is by pointing out how Beyonce was able to free herself and get more control over her business by firing daddy Knowles, which coincided with the release of her self-titled album Beyonce.
As Emma so eloquently points out, the world got to see not Matthew Knowles’ little girl Beyonce, the lead singer in Destiny Child, but the world got to see Beyonce, the grown, independent woman. Emma told Tavi, “When I watch this album I feel like she is truly displaying her own sense of agency and it is hard to look at a lot of other pop stars right now and say the same.”
Emma did recognize that some young women may start hating and saying, “She loving on Beyonce҄ too much, saying she like Janet and she got control. Hell, we like Janet. We got control.”
So, being the insightful young lady that she is, Emma made it clear to Tavi that she wasn’t trying to bad mouth anybody, she was just acknowledging how Beyonce's success could also help other young women: “I don’t mean for that to sound condescending and I’m obviously not one to argue that young women have no self-awareness or autonomy, but it makes a difference that Beyonce҄ is the head of her own empire.”
Yet, old man Morgan didn’t read any of this because he was too busy being an old head hating on young guls. He wrote in his Daily Mail article that little Emma was busy exposing, “-not just her breasts. She also exposed herself to some as a feminist fraud; someone who professes to want other women to have the ‘freedom and liberation’ to decide how they behave as feminists, but who actually wants to dictate to them how they behave as feminists.”
Keep in mind, this is a 51-year-old man, old enough to be Tavi and Emma’s pappy. Yet, he’s calling out young women who are 20+ years his junior while also telling Emma about her titties.
Of course, he is not alone in his hating for no good reason. He is joined on this hate train by Cosmopolitan Writer Peggy Truong and Huffington Post Contributor Leah Thomas.
Like Old Man Morgan, Thomas and Truong allow their emotions to guide them in making their judgements about little Emma’s comments.
They take bits and pieces of the article that fit their narrative in order to make their argument seem more logical than what it really is. And to make matters worse, not only did Thomas fail to read the article but she got her information about little Emma there from Truong, who misquoted little Emma there.
In her article, Truong attributed Tavi’s quote to Emma. Truong wrote , “As the Beyhive points out, at the time, Emma was highly critical of how Beyonce presented herself in her 2013 self-titled visual album ‘As I was watching [the videos] I felt very conflicted, I felt her message felt very conflicted in the sense that on the one hand she is putting herself in a category of a feminist, but then the camera, it felt very male, such a male voyeuristic experience of her.”
I must admit, Old Man Morgan did at least attribute this quote to the right person. But these two, Thomas and Truong, unh unh.
Thomas turned around and cited Truong’s article as evidence that little Emma was wrong in what she said about Beyonce.
Thomas wrote, “A few years back Emma Watson effectively questioned Beyonce's motives for baring some skin. Emma seemed to question Beyonce's version of feminism and made the point that it focused too much on male pleasure…It felt like Beyonce was being called a bad feminist, hungry for male consumption, for no other reason than being sexy in her music videos. To that end, Emma Watson’s behavior was hypocritical.”
Thomas went on to say that because of little Emma’s “hypocritical” behavior “the facts are simple and they are clear.” Well, that’s not the case.
Thomas’ “simple and clear” evidence came from bad information she received from Truong, who quoted the wrong person in her article.
Unfortunately for Old Man Morgan, Truong, and Thomas, they’ll never figure out that they did the very thing that folks who have a narrow perspective about race and or gender do.
They saw what they thought was bad about someone who didn’t fit into their group and they ran with it because it fit their narrative and made them look good.
And the fact that all of these "well-informed" folks ran with a story without doing their due diligence highlights why so many people are distrusting of the media and the “highly educated.”
It’s so sad, so sad.
